Purchase a fossicking licence or fossicking camping permit
Fossickers require a current fossicking licence. You can purchase a fossicking licence online, from a mines assessment hub or from an authorised agent.
A fossicking licence allows you to search for and collect fossicking materials by hand for recreational, tourist and educational purposes only. You can receive an on-the-spot fine or be prosecuted if you breach the provisions of your fossicking licence.
Licences are not required at tourist mines and sites that charge an entry fee. However, if the site is unlicensed, you will need a licence.
You don’t need a licence to hunt for treasure or lost items using a metal detector—check with the local council for rules about accessing public beaches and other areas for this purpose.
A fossicking camping permit is required to camp on designated fossicking lands and areas.
